Kalinga State University recently conducted on January 24, 2025, at the Teatro Kalinga 'Revive and Thrive,' a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing the growing mental health concerns among its student population. Recognizing the alarming rise in depression, anxiety, and even suicide rates, the university emphasizes the crucial link between mental well-being and academic success.
"Revive and Thrive" aligns with KSU's core values, particularly its Vision to be a "premier university for human and societal development" and its Mission to "provide quality and relevant education and research, promote sustainable development, and contribute to nation-building."
The event featured a ceremonial opening, including the singing of the KSU Hymn and recitation of the university's Vision and Mission. Mr. Ronald Bulwayan, Director for Student Development and Placement Services, delivered the welcome remarks, followed by an inspirational message from Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang.
A significant portion of the program involved an open forum called “Kamustahan with the Congressman” where students actively engaged with the Congressman, raising critical concerns. These included the detrimental impact of the Kalinga page, with its unfiltered and often offensive content, on student mental health. Concerns were also raised about "palakasan" (favoritism) in both public and private employment sectors.
Several students sought career guidance, inquiring about potential career paths and seeking personal insights from the Congressman on how to become effective public servants and leaders. Some students expressed a need for academic assistance to improve their studies.
Beyond seeking advice, many students shared personal encounters with the Congressman, expressing gratitude for the support he and his family have extended to them. They also shared how Congressman Mangaoang has served as an inspiration in their lives.
"Simultaneously with the "Kamustahan," a healthy food cooking demo show was conducted. Students from the College of Entrepreneurship, Tourism, and Hospitality Management (CETHM) prepared healthy alternative recipes for Tuna, Ham Sandwich, and Chopsuey. The ingredients for these healthy dishes were generously sponsored by the Congressman and his wife, Dr. Carol Agyao, a strong advocate for mental and physical health.
The program also included valuable practical workshops. Dr. Chary C. Agod conducted a Basic Life Support Training session, equipping participants with essential lifesaving skills. Furthermore, the Philippine Army and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conducted an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign, raising awareness about disaster preparedness and safety measures, enhancing the overall well-being and resilience of the student body.
The "Revive and Thrive" launch was attended by officers from various student organizations across KSU. The program was initiated by these student organizations and generously sponsored by the office of Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang, who provided complete First Aid Kits to all 11 colleges of the university.
This comprehensive launch signifies KSU's commitment to prioritizing student mental well-being and fostering a holistic and supportive learning environment.
